Cotard’s delusion is a mental disorder characterized by the patient’s conviction that he is dead or nonexistent, or that the world does not exist. In all other regards, the patient’s faculties tend to remain intact, and the patient is able to think and talk sensibly and reasonably about his condition.
To the sufferer, this radical nihilation seems completely reasonable and in keeping with common sense. The experience of being told, “no, you are not dead; we will not throw your body in the trash” must be, I imagine, as distressing and nonsensical as the schizophrenic’s experience of being told by imaginary demons, “eat some glass- it’ll be good for you.”
